Ballast Water Treatment, Corrosion Protection and Inert Gas

It always arouses enthusiasm when ship borne equipment may be used for more than one purpose. Gazcon PSA Nitrogen Generator System for Inert Gas may, in addition to provide the cheapest and cleanest gas available also be applied in a number of other ship-related applications.

The superior and well proven technology of Gazcon PSA Nitrogen Generators is now offering solutions for four different purposes.

- Clean and dry Inert Gas with purities from 95% to 99.998%

- Dry air for vessel's work air and drying of cargo tanks

- Preservation of cargo handling systems, void spaces and ballast water tanks

- Ballast Water Treatment, as a part of a complete BWT system

Gazcon has during the last year been in close dialogue with ship owners to jointly find the optimal solution to a BWT system with small foot print, limited energy consumption and high reliability.

For vessels already installed with a Nitrogen Generator system capable of producing high purity nitrogen this is just an add-on.

New buildings give us the possibility to offer an extremely interesting overall solution combining Inert Gas, the major part of BWT, preservation of corrosion exposed areas and the vessel's work air supply.

A single package based on components already widely used in the maritime environment.

Why high purity Nitrogen as the major part of a BWT system?

When the ballast water is mixed with high pure nitrogen supplied as very small bubbles it reacts with the oxygen in the water and the combined product leaves the water removing the oxygen. This will in a very short time result in the oxygen percentage in the ballast water drops to a level where only anaerobic organisms can survive.

To achieve this rapid decrease in oxygen percentage, while ensuring that the mixing takes place in approximately 100 percent of ballast water, we use rotary jets positioned in the ballast water tank. A well proven technology used in tank cleaning.

Apart from removing the oxygen this offers two big advantages; release of a significant portion of the bottom sludge normally always in the tanks, secondly maintaining the ballast water tanks constantly inerted which reduces the corrosion factor by 99.99 percent.
